Elevate Your Art, One Hue at a Time

Ever felt your artwork needed that extra splash of brilliance?  Enter Gamut Color Wheel Masking, the sidekick you didn't know you needed.

Why It's A Game-Changer:

  • Mood Mastery: Set the tone, from serene sunsets to vibrant cityscapes, and watch your art come alive.
  • Palette Precision: Simplify your color choices, turning the selection process from a puzzle into pure pleasure.
  • Harmony in Hues: Design color palettes that flow seamlessly, ensuring your artwork is both striking and balanced.

With Gamut Color Wheel Masking, you're not just selecting colors; you're curating experiences. Dive in and let your art do the talking!

I developed a tool to guide myself in selecting appropriate colors through an image that limits the available color options.  The original concept is credited to artist James Gurney.  I realized there was not a similar tool available for Aseprite.  The included files should be compatible with other programs that support .aseprite files.

Here is a step-by-step guide on using the image and layers:

  1.     Unhide one of the mask layers by clicking on the eye.
  2.     Press Ctrl-T / Transform.
  3.     Rotate the mask using the "rotation" anchor on a corner.
  4.     Select a few colors on opposing sides of the mask.
  5.     Alternatively, click on "New Palette from Sprite" in the palette options menu.
  6.     Then order, rearrange, and delete the color swatches as needed.

Here is a guide on how to create your own custom masks:

  1.     Duplicate the layer named "Duplicate, Mask, Change Opac" by right-clicking on the layer and selecting Duplicate.
  2.     Rename the layer to "Custom" or another name of your choice.
  3.     Unhide the layer by clicking on the eye.
  4.     Unlock the layer by clicking on the lock icon.
  5.     Draw on the color wheel using the "mask" color to reveal the colors underneath.
  6.     Set the opacity of the layer to 255.
  7.     Rotate the mask using the Transform feature.

There are five different resolutions for the color wheel (320, 640, 1280, 1920, and 3840 / 4K).

Each image was handcrafted instead of using the "Sprite Size" or resizing features to avoid anti-aliasing or strange artifacts from resizing.

Also included is a "Check Saturation" layer to see which colors will stand out more and backup files in case you want to go back to the original files.

Please feel free to leave questions or comments below. Thank you for your patronage.

Please note, the amount of RAM or memory needed to run the 1920 and 3840 / 4K version is large.  The image may rotate slowly otherwise.

What's the licensing for this awesome tool?

Good news!  This tool comes with an extended commercial license.  This means you have the freedom to use and modify it for as many commercial projects as you'd like, with no limits on sales or views.  NOTE:  Reselling the tool or repacking it into a bulk content set is not allowed.  While you're not required to give Also Fun Games a shout out, a little nod our way in your credits or somewhere would be fantastic!
